Halloween is the most theatrical holiday, so it makes perfect sense that Broadway actors—who understand the value of rocking a costume—would embrace the spooky season. We asked your favorite stage stars to share memories of yummy treats, silly tricks and the best and worst costumes they ever wore—with a photo! Happy Halloween!
LENA HALL (Nicola in Kinky Boots)
What was your favorite Halloween costume of all time, and how old were you when you wore it?
I have a few! (1) Jay and Silent Bob, which I wore last year, with me as Jay and my boyfriend as Silent Bob. (2) The Childlike Empress and Sebastian from The NeverEnding Story, with my then-boyfriend, nine years ago; we acted out that last scene: "Bastian PLEASE! Say my name! Say! My! Name!" (3) A Blood-Sucking Lawyer, way back in 1996, where I wore a three-piece suit with suitcase, vampire fangs and drank blood from a coffee mug. I thought it was hilarious and brilliant, but most people were confused.
What’s the most embarrassing Halloween costume you ever wore?
One year I was so tired that I threw on a pair of bunny ears and called it a day. Embarrassing because you could tell I didn't give a crap and usually I really, really do give a crap about Halloween. (Above: me as Cupid at age nine!)
What’s your favorite Halloween candy, and why?
Reese’s Pieces, because peanut butter and chocolate are one of the greatest combinations ever (especially little niblets of chocolate peanut butter with a yummy crunchy crust) and that iconic moment in E.T. Need I say more?
What’s the worst “treat” you were ever given on Halloween?
A toothbrush. As an adult I appreciate the sentiment, but as a kid… LET US ROT OUR TEETH! Give us pure sugar in a wrapper and call it a day.
Have you ever dressed up as a Broadway character? If so, which one?
Actually, no. Maybe I knew growing up that I would play dress-up every night as Broadway characters as an adult, But I did dress as Claire Danes' Angel in Romeo and Juliet, sang “Kissing You” and acted out the balcony scene and loved every minute of it. I guess that doesn't count.
What is your favorite Halloween horror movie, and why?
The Nightmare Before Christmas! Attention Broadway producers: This needs to be made into a live musical!!! Just saying.
What do you think is the hottest Broadway-themed costume for 2013?
Lola and Charlie from Kinky Boots!
What is your Halloween costume this year?
This year I will be in full ’80s regalia rocking and rolling with Constantine Maroulis and the band Jessie's Girl for a private party…so, essentially, I will be working this Halloween.
What do you love most about Halloween?
Everyone else: I love people watching and seeing how creative they get with their costumes. Also toddler, baby and dog watching, cause they always make the cutest lions and tigers and bears, OH MY!
